Weather - It's everywhere

The weather is something we all have in common. That's so obvious, it seems a little ridiculous. It's not as obvious as we think.

I was walking to my office this morning and the humidity was lower than the sweltering heat and humidity we had yesterday. I intentionally slowed my pace in order to enjoy the cool(er) breeze. I find myself having to intentionally find ways to stay in touch with nature. Walking to the office is one of the ways. Stepping off the sidewalk to walk in the grass is another.

As Americans, we worry so much about the digital explosion and how screens are taking the place of the 'real world'. What we fail to realize is, this isn't anything new. How many of us move from the climate controlled surroundings of our cars to our climate controlled office or home? We make that journey as short and painless as possible so we don't have to feel anything - heat, cold, rain, wind, snow.

I think part of our obsession with the weather is because we can't completely control it. Weather reminds us there are forces bigger and more powerful than we are. The deism of Thomas Jefferson and other of our Founding Fathers was committed to the idea that there was something/Someone bigger but that entity wasn't really involved with the likes of us humans. I beg to differ.

What if part of the weather's job was to remind us there is Someone more? Even better, that Someone wants our good, wants us to know rain as a blessing, that days when it's too hot or too cold to move around outside are opportunities to rest. Weather reinforces the rhythms of life. Like the old song says: So if it's raining, have no regrets. Instead of raining rain you know it's raining violets. There is a reason God told Moses to take off his shoes. God tells us the same thing. The ground we are standing on is literally holy ground.
